How does microsuction earwax removal work at Interhearing clinics?
Microsuction is a quick and safe way to remove ear wax. At Interhearing, microsuction is performed by NHS experienced ear care professionals. The microsuction technique uses gentle suction under magnification, so no water is introduced into the ear, and it can often be used where syringing or irrigation isn’t suitable.
A special, thin tube is carefully used to remove ear wax from inside the ear canal, with gentle suction applied to slowly remove the ear blockage. Our ear care team use special magnification glasses known as medical loupes, to see inside the ear during the procedure.
Preparation is simple
With microsuction, there is no need to use ear drops for weeks prior to treatment, just the night before, and the morning of your appointment, if ear wax is deep, very dry or compacted. Some patients do not need to use any ear drops before treatment.
Why is Ear Wax a Problem?
Ear wax can cause discomfort, dizziness, pain and hearing loss - it can even cause ringing in the ears (or tinnitus). Removing it alleviates these issues and can improve hearing and help with social and emotional well-being.
Removal of earwax is especially important if you wear regularly wear hearing aids, hearing protection or ear buds/ headphones, as this can inhibit the natural migration of wax from the ear.
This build-up of wax can also reduce the effectiveness of hearing aids and make them whistle.

What is Microsuction?
When it comes to ear wax removal, cotton buds and other home treatments can often make things worse. Water-based methods such as irrigation are suitable for many people, but they can occasionally cause side effects such as discomfort, dizziness or infection, and aren’t suitable for everyone.
Microsuction is a precise, water-free way to remove earwax using a gentle medical suction device, carried out while the clinician looks directly into your ear under magnification. With microsuction, there’s no need to wait until your ear is totally blocked with wax and you can’t hear, and you usually won’t need to use ear drops for days or weeks before treatment.
Many people notice relief from blocked ears straight away. Both ear syringing (irrigation) and microsuction are recognised ways to remove ear wax. Here are some of the main differences between them:
Water-Free
Syringing and irrigation use water to flush wax out of the ear canal. Microsuction is water-free, which can make it a suitable option for people who shouldn’t have water in their ears, such as those with a history of perforation or ear surgery.
Direct Vision
Microsuction is carried out while the clinician looks directly into the ear canal using a microscope or special magnifying glasses called medical loupes, so they can see the wax as it is removed.
Preparation
Irrigation usually works best after several days of using softening drops. Microsuction often needs little or no preparation, although drops can help if wax is very hard.
