Don’t Use Cotton Buds!

When it comes to ear wax removal, cotton buds just make things worse. If you want to remove ear wax, you can do this via ear syringing or microsuction.

Microsuction is a far better option than syringing. Unlike ear syringing, with microsuction there’s no need to wait until the ear is totally blocked with wax and you can’t hear. At Interhearing, we can remove wax at any stage of build-up, and you don’t need to use any ear-drops.

The Ear Wax Removal Procedure

Microsuction is a quick and safe way to remove ear wax. At Interhearing, microsuction is performed by NHS experienced ear car professionals. The microsuction technique uses gentle suction to clean the ear and is much safer and more comfortable than all other forms of ear cleaning, including syringing and irrigation.

A special, thin tube is carefully used to remove ear wax from inside the ear canal, with gentle suction applied to slowly remove the ear blockage. Our ear care team use special magnification glasses known as medical loupes, to see inside the ear during the procedure.

Preparation is simple

With microsuction, there is no need to use ear drops for weeks prior to treatment, just the night before, and the morning of your appointment, if ear wax is deep, very dry or compacted. Some patients do not need to use any ear drops before treatment.

Why is ear wax a problem?

Why is Ear Wax a Problem?

Ear wax can cause discomfort, dizziness, pain and hearing loss - it can even cause ringing in the ears (or tinnitus). Removing it alleviates these issues and can improve hearing and help with social and emotional well-being.

Removal of earwax is especially important if you wear regularly wear hearing aids, hearing protection or ear buds/ headphones, as this can inhibit the natural migration of wax from the ear.

This build-up of wax can also reduce the effectiveness of hearing aids and make them whistle.

What is Microsuction?

When it comes to ear wax removal, cotton buds and other home treatments can often make things worse, and syringing can cause severe discomfort and possible side effects such as infections and vertigo.

If you want to remove earwax, the safest and most comfortable way to do it is by microsuction. Unlike ear syringing, microsuction is a water-free way to remove earwax using a gentle, mechanical vacuum. With microsuction, there’s no need to wait until your ear is totally blocked with wax and you can’t hear, and you won’t have to use ear drops for days and weeks before treatment.

Microsuction brings instant relief from the inconvenience and discomfort of blocked ears. Interhearing clinics have been providing local, independent ear wax removal by microsuction in clinics across Shropshire, Cheshire, the West Midlands, Berkshire and Powys since 2009 - with no need for a GP referral and with without the long wait.

Benefits of micro-suction

Benefits of Microsuction

Benefits of Microsuction

  • Suitable for adults and children with narrow ear canals, or those who cannot have ear syringing or irrigation, including patients with a history of perforations, infections or operations such as grommets.

  • Significantly lower risk of perforation and infection than other treatments

  • Not necessary to use ear drops prior to wax removal (or minimum use for very hard wax)

  • Commonly used when syringing has not been successful or caused pain/discomfort.

  • No long waiting list

  • Speeds up Audiological referrals for patients requiring hearing aids

Microsuction - A Safer Alternative to Ear Syringing

The concerns with the safety and effectiveness of ear syringing as a wax removal method have prompted a shift towards safer alternatives like microsuction. Here are some of the main concerns around ear syringing:

Outdated Method

Ear syringing, once common, is now deemed less safe and effective. Modern practices like microsuction offer a safer alternative, leading to its diminished recommendation by health experts.

Risk of Infection

Ear syringing can increase infection risks by introducing water into the ear canal, disrupting its natural balance. Microsuction, avoiding any fluid introduction, significantly lowers this risk of infection or irritation.

Less Precision

Ear syringing lacks the precision of microsuction, which uses a microscope or special glasses called medical loupes, for accurate ear wax removal. This imprecision can lead to incomplete cleaning or potential ear damage, unlike the targeted approach of microsuction.
